From elbows to shoulders, fingers, toes, and even the spinal column, all of the joints in our body can be subjected to painful dislocation. If you’ve ever suffered a dislocated joint, you know how incredibly painful the injury can be. And, if not properly treated, dislocated joints can cause long-term issues.
The Most Common Ways Dislocations Occur
There are many ways joints can become dislocated. Athletes, of course, are prone to injuries in general. This is particularly true for those athletes that participate in contact sports. Basketball and football players tend to suffer a lot of dislocated fingers when handling a fast-moving ball incorrectly. Dancers can dislocate knees easily when they do not land a jump properly.
Of course, you don’t have to be a pro athlete or dancer to sustain a dislocation. These happen from falls and accidents. Many people can actually dislocate their toes when they stub them.
The good news is, when properly treated, dislocated joints can heal very quickly. Often times injuries can be completely healed in just one to two weeks.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Chiropractic care is an effective treatment for dislocation. It’s also a great way to prevent future dislocations, which often occur once the first has happened. Chiropractors work to align the body’s structural components. Depending on where the dislocation has occurred, they will perform a series of movements and/or adjustments to realign joints. To reduce future dislocations, a chiropractor will focus on increasing ligament strength.
When Should You Seek Care?
When a person suspects they have dislocated a joint, they should immediately head to the ER to have that bone reset back into place. During the ER visit, the doctor will also check to see if there has been any damage done to the surrounding soft tissue. Sometimes, as is often the case with dislocated shoulders, surgery will be required to repair any ligament tears.
Once the initial medical intervention has occurred, it’s a good idea to connect with a chiropractor, who will sit down with you to come up with a treatment plan to help speed recovery time and prevent future dislocations.
If you have sustained a dislocation and would like an evaluation, please give our office a call or stop by. We can discuss long-term strategies that will optimize healing and prevent any future chance of injury.
